VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — In Hampton Roads, several people told 13News Now that they're having trouble connecting with their loved ones in Jamaica in the wake of Hurricane Melissa.

One woman in Virginia Beach, Niaylah Mascall, said she's been trying to reach her parents, who were staying at Hideaway Blue Waters near Trelawny.

Mascall said her parents flew to Jamaica last Friday from Norfolk to celebrate her mom's birthday. She said the last phone call they answered from her was before the hurricane hit the island.

“Last time I heard from my mom was like yesterday at 12 p.m.,” said Mascall.

Phone calls to her parents, Dawn and Andrew, went straight to a disconnected line.

Mascall called the hotel, too, near Trelawny; still nothing.
