EXETER – Freshman Mollie Gaynor said the St. Thomas Aquinas field hockey team has been an underdog all year, but nobody can overlook the Saints now.
After surviving an overtime thriller against Mascoma in the quarterfinals, the fourth-seeded Saints upset No. 1 Berlin, 2-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 29, and punched their ticket to Saturday's state championship.
“The girls just played absolutely phenomenal today,” St. Thomas coach Lindsay Dobecki said. “We’re so proud of them. Everyone from our goalie, defense, middies, and forwards; everyone just stepped up in big moments when we needed them.”
St. Thomas (13-3) will face No. 3 seed Mascenic for the state championship on Saturday at Bedford High School. Mascenic, which beat STA, 1-0 in the regular season, advanced with a 3-2 win over No. 2 Hopkin
