Days before he resigned as Director of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Raipur, citing concerns over “administrative autonomy and operational integrity”, the Ministry of Education informed Ram Kumar Kakani that he was bound to “follow and implement the decisions” of the institute’s Board of Governors, according to documents reviewed by The Indian Express .

The Ministry’s communication sent on July 11 — ten days before Kakani’s resignation — effectively sided with the Board in a running dispute over who held executive authority at the institute under the IIM Act, 2017.

The Indian Express first reported, on October 8, that Kakani quit on July 21, two years before the end of his tenure, over differences with the Chairperson of the Board of Governors.
