Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has reaffirmed Australia’s support for the “status quo” on Taiwan, regarding its relationship with China.

Mr Albanese has been visiting South Korea for the APEC summit, alongside US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who meet on Thursday.

Regional strategic tensions, particularly over Beijing-claimed Taiwan, have served as an ominous backdrop to the summit.

There have been concerns that Taiwan could be used by US President Donald Trump as a bargaining chip in negotiations with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Under existing US laws, the United States would be required to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself if it were attacked by China.
