HMRC has warned there is just "six months" to go until the biggest tax change for 30 years. From next April, sole traders will be required to use Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax in the biggest shake-up to the self-assessment regime since it was introduced nearly 30 years ago.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, HMRC wrote: "There’s just 6 months to go until Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. From April 2026 there will be a new way to report income from self-employment and property to us.

"Check if you need to sign up for the next tax year." It means people with qualifying income of £50,000 and above must keep digital records, use MTD-compatible software and submit quarterly summaries of their income and expenses to HMRC.
