‘Deepfake’ videos of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann have led to a war of words between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and Opposition parties in Punjab.

The BJP has been criticising Mann’s silence and calling for a forensic examination of the videos. It demanded that the chief minister clarify his relationship with Canada-based Jagmandeep Singh Samra, alias Jagman Samra, whose account allegedly uploaded the videos. Meanwhile, AAP spokespersons accused the BJP of launching a campaign to defame Mann.

On October 21, the cybercrime wing of the Punjab Police’s Mohali unit registered an FIR against Samra for posting “AI-generated vulgar content” of the Punjab CM. A Mohali court subsequently ordered platforms such as Facebook and Google to remove or block all such content within 24 hours.
