Halloween can be fun for us, but it can be a stressful time for our pets. There are scary decorations, strange noises, costumes and lots of doorbell rings.

Some pets won’t notice the giant skeleton or inflatable spider, while others will definitely make their concerns known. Consider having some extra treats on hand to distract your dog and encourage them to be brave puppies.

If you’re planning to put your pet in a Halloween costume, consider giving them time to get used to it — or ditching it altogether. Costumes can easily add more stress to an already stressful night.

Halloween pet safety

First thing’s first: Candy is for humans! Keep the bowl out of reach of pets to avoid any accidental ingestion.

According to PetMD, some of the most dangerous candies for dogs are:

  • Chocolates.
  • Chocolate-covered raisins.
  • Hard candies.
  • Candy corn.
  • Lollipops.

Be mindful of candy wrappers, too. To our pets, they can be just as appealing as the candy inside — but just as upsetting to the stomach.

Accidents can happen, though. If your pet gets into some candy, call your veterinarian or local emergency vet immediately. It’s always a good idea to have the number saved in your phone or posted on your fridge.

If you’re hosting a party, make sure guests know what your dog is and isn’t allowed to eat — from table scraps to candy. Those puppy-dog eyes can be tempting, but resist! Their stomach will thank you later.

Pet stress

Doorbells can be a big source of stress for many animals — and on a night like Halloween, they can be a nightmare for pets and humans.

If the night is bound to be full of doorbell chimes, create a safe space for your pet. Set up their favorite bed or crate in a quiet room with water and a few favorite toys. Playing white noise or turning on the TV can also help drown out the evening’s festivities.

Some smart doorbells allow you to turn off the chime that plays in your house. No sound, no stress!

If you still have a standard doorbell, consider sitting outside to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters — or take the slightly riskier approach of leaving the bowl on the doorstep.
