The core of Hurricane Melissa is pulling away from the Bahamas on Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Melissa is currently located about 215 miles from the central Bahamas. It has maximum sustained winds of 105 mph and a minimum central pressure of 968 millibars.

The major hurricane hit Cuba early Wednesday morning and slammed Jamaica on Tuesday afternoon. It made landfall in the city of Chivirico in the Cuban province of Santiago de Cuba with sustained winds of 100 mph.

Melissa made landfall in southwestern Jamaica near New Hope with estimated maximum sustained winds of 185 mph and an estimated minimum central pressure of 892 mb, the National Hurricane Center said.

It was one of the strongest storms in the Atlantic Basin ever recorded.
