Major traffic disruptions are currently affecting the M25 in Surrey due to an overturned lorry, resulting in significant delays and six-mile queues. The motorway has been partially closed in the anti-clockwise direction between Junction 10 (Cobham) and Junction 9 (Leatherhead) following the incident.
Traffic monitoring service Inrix reports that congestion extends to Junction 11 (Chertsey). Emergency services, including Surrey Police and the ambulance service, are on the scene to manage the situation.
Surrey Police have advised motorists to avoid the area, stating, "We are responding to a collision on the M25 anti-clockwise between Junctions 10 and 9. All four lanes are currently closed. Please find an alternative route and avoid the area if you can. Thank you for your patience."
In light of the ongoing disruption, National Highways has urged drivers to allow extra journey time. A spokesperson said, "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead; you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."
For those needing to travel, National Highways has provided a diversion route. Motorists are advised to follow the Hollow Square diversion symbol on road signs. The suggested route involves exiting the M25 at Junction 10 (Wisley Interchange), taking the first exit onto the A3 towards London, and continuing through various junctions until rejoining the M25 at Junction 8 (Reigate Hill Interchange).
As the situation develops, drivers are encouraged to check for updates via National Highways' website, travel apps, or their regional Twitter feed. The 24/7 contact centre is also available for real-time information at 0300 123 5000.
The incident highlights the importance of planning ahead during travel, especially on busy motorways like the M25.
