Groups in Connecticut are collecting donations and money to help families in Jamaica rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Melissa.

The West Indian Social Club in Hartford hosted a meeting to discuss updates, relief coordination and ways the local community can support affected areas.

Some of those attending, including Hartford’s City Council President Shirley Surgeon, still haven’t heard from loved ones on the island.

Surgeon has been trying to get in touch with her cousins in Saint Elizabeth Parish.

"The last time I heard from them was last week before the hurricane," Surgeon said. “The flooding, the wind, the trees down, trying to reach the people is the difficult part of not knowing.”
