The Brooklyn Nets finally fought to the finish, but still came up just short in their bid to post their first win of the year before 17,548 fans at Downtown’s Barclays Center on Wednesday night.
“I thought the fight was there,” said coach Jordi Fernández following a 117-112 defeat to the Atlanta Hawks.
Brooklyn (0-5) burst out of the gate with a blistering 12-0 run, fueled by six points from high-flying center Nic Claxton.
But the Hawks (2-3) whittled away at the early deficit and went ahead to stay when Dyson Daniels made it 20-19 with an eight-foot floater.
Atlanta led by as many as 17 in the first half, but the Nets slowly but surely reeled them in following intermission.
Michael Porter Jr. was at the forefront of the Brooklyn attack with a game-high 32 points on 12-of-20 shooting,
