In Brewster County—Texas’s largest county, located in the state’s least populous region—residents often need to travel to larger cities to seek comprehensive medical care. This can become increasingly difficult, disruptive, and painful for dying patients. Staff writer Sasha von Oldershausen explores themes of grief, dignity, and access while discussing her reporting on Karen Ramirez , the county’s sole hospice nurse, and the families who depend on her.
