LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

SNAP benefits won't go out for November if the government doesn't reopen by Saturday.

That means in just a few days, around 42 million people across the U.S. who rely on federal assistance for food could be left hanging in the balance.

About 1 in 8 Americans rely on SNAP, formerly called the Food Stamp Program, to buy food.

Across Kentucky and Indiana alone, that could affect more than a million people.

We analyzed the state data to see how they compare to other states, and which counties and regions could be most vulnerable.

Breaking down data

As of May, there are more than 595,000 SNAP recipients in Kentucky, which is about 12.6% of the population. And in Indiana, more than 586,000, or about 9% of the population.
