BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is warning that scammers are targeting people in their county with a new scam.
This scam involves family members and friends of people who have recently been jailed, Dep. Carli Carr says.
Deputies have received numerous complaints about scam artists calling relatives and friends of detainees at the Berkeley County jail, she says. The scammers falsely claim to be law enforcement officers, bail bondsmen, or other representatives involved in the release process.
“Scammers are reportedly asking for payment to post bond or provide ankle monitors, claiming it is necessary to secure the release of their loved one,” Carr says.
