Dr. Richard Conlin Jr., an orthodontist who spent more than half a century helping patients smile brighter — and who made sure they laughed a little along the way — died Sept. 28. He was 95.
For more than 50 years, Dr. Conlin practiced in Penn Hills, where his Rodi Road office become known not only for its dental services but also for its unusual and joyful atmosphere.
If a patient from Venezuela or Uganda or Japan was scheduled that day, for example, he would hang the country’s flag in the office to make them feel welcome. Each day also featured a “word of the day” — something new and curious that he encouraged his staff and patients to use in conversation.
