HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — Brad Marchand has temporarily stepped away from the Florida Panthers to support a friend following a tragic loss. The NHL player is serving as a guest coach for the under-18 March and Mill Co. Hunters in his hometown of Halifax on Wednesday night. This opportunity comes in place of his friend JP MacCallum, whose daughter, Selah Panacci-MacCallum, passed away last week at the age of 10 after a battle with cancer.
Marchand, who is a co-owner of the team, is participating in a fundraising event to assist the MacCallum family during this difficult time. The game will feature a raffle for an autographed Marchand jersey, with proceeds going to the family.
In an Instagram post, Marchand encouraged the community to join in honoring Selah's memory. He wrote, "Please join us in celebrating an amazing night at the rink made possible by the ongoing giving nature of a 10-year-old girl that loved the game with all her (heart)."
Marchand missed the Panthers' game against Anaheim on Tuesday night. However, Coach Paul Maurice anticipates that he will return to the lineup when the back-to-back defending Stanley Cup champions face the Dallas Stars on Saturday.
On Wednesday, Marchand was seen at the rink in Halifax, actively coaching the U18 team in honor of his friend and his friend's daughter. His actions have drawn praise, with some commentators highlighting his character and commitment to helping others in their time of need.
