SEATTLE — Washington's senators weighed in Wednesday as lawmakers remain deadlocked over how to keep SNAP and WIC funded , with just two days remaining before millions of Americans lose access to critical food assistance programs.

More than 900,000 Washington residents could lose their benefits Nov. 1 if Congress fails to act by Friday.

"Hungry children, middle class families who've just lost someone's job, veterans, senior citizens who struggle to pay for their food — all of these people will lose their SNAP benefits," said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

Democrats introduced a bill Wednesday that would tap contingency funds to keep both SNAP and WIC running during the government shutdown. Senate Republicans blocked the measure within hours.
