A homeless man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of a woman who had offered him shelter. Apapale Adoum, 39, pleaded guilty to killing Victoria Adams, 37, at her home in Hammersmith, west London, in February. Adoum was arrested after police responded to reports of a break-in, discovering Ms Adams face down with a black bin covering her head and a pillow on top. She had suffered at least ten severe injuries to her head, inflicted with a mallet. Victoria Adams had taken Adoum in just three days prior, after finding him at a homeless shelter. However, after deciding to ask him to leave, she left a note for him. Adoum was charged with two counts of possessing an offensive weapon and received a 42-week sentence. He was re-arrested on June 5 after detectives linked him to Ms Adams' death. At the Old Bailey, Judge Nigel Lickley KC sentenced Adoum to life in prison with a minimum term of 21 years. He described the attack as a "brutal and savage" betrayal of Ms Adams' kindness. Detective Chief Inspector Matt Denby expressed hope that Adoum's guilty plea would provide some comfort to Ms Adams' family. He stated, "It is a tragedy that she was killed by Adoum after offering him a place to stay and showing him kindness during his time of need. Victoria deserved better." In a victim impact statement, Ms Adams' aunt, Cathy Adams, described her niece as "trusting, generous to a fault, caring and fun-loving." She lamented that Ms Adams had paid for her kindness with her life. Younger sister Sophie Luff shared her devastation, stating, "The hardest part is knowing she left behind four beautiful children. It breaks my heart to know they will grow up without her. She didn't deserve this, no one does." The court heard that Adoum had met Ms Adams on February 6 at the homeless shelter. Just two days later, he attacked her with severe force. Prosecutor John Price KC noted that Adoum had a history of violence and was armed with two knives and a screwdriver at the time of his arrest. Judge Lickley emphasised the gravity of the crime, stating, "Victoria Adams was murdered in her own home. She had taken you in and offered you shelter." The case highlights the tragic consequences of misplaced trust and the vulnerability of those who extend kindness to others.
