Canadian-American singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright took the field at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday to perform the Canadian national anthem, O Canada, ahead of Game 5 of the World Series.
And it didn't take long for fans to notice a subtle lyric change. It appeared to be deliberate.
Instead of singing the lyric “in all of us command,” Wainwright sang it as, "That only us command.” The change to the lyric appeared to be an intentional protest of U.S. president Donald Trump's comments on threatening Canadian sovereignty and referring to the country as the "51st state."
Take a listen to the full performance:
The lyric change was reminiscent of Canadian Chantal Kreviazuk's anthem performance ahead of the 4 Nations Face-Off final. At the time, Kreviazuk also sang the lyric as "that only us command.”
Wainwright hasn't commented publicly on the tweak, but it seemed obvious what the intended message was.
