DES MOINES — Gov. Kim Reynolds announced that Iowa will provide temporary support to food banks and pantries as the federal government shutdown is expected to halt SNAP benefits on November 1. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is working with regional food banks to prepare for increased demand, identifying staffing, distribution, and inventory as key needs.
Gov. Reynolds has directed HHS and Volunteer Iowa to mobilize volunteers to support food assistance efforts statewide. Additionally, the Iowa National Guard is on standby to assist with food distribution.
To bolster food supplies, Gov. Reynolds has allocated state funds to match up to $1 million in donations to Iowa's six regional food banks starting November 3, should SNAP benefits lapse. These food banks support
