An Everett, Massachusetts, teen who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this month is seeking to return to his native Brazil.

His attorney, Andrew Lattarulo, confirmed to NBC10 Boston that the boy intends to travel with his uncles and remain in Brazil while his parents continue their asylum case.

The family is hoping this will increase the teen's chances of one day returning to the U.S., while also avoiding having to spend more time detained in Virginia.

The 13-year-old has been held since Oct. 9, when ICE picked him up from the Everett Police Department.
