In a first-round matchup of the 1A/2A conference tournament Monday, the Union Spartans battled through heavy downpours to overwhelm East Columbus by a score of 7-1, advancing to the semifinals and keeping their championship aspirations alive.
Head coach Evert Cruz said the victory reflected both the team’s growth and its resilience after tying the same opponent earlier in the season.
“It was a challenging game knowing that the last time we met with them, we tied,” Cruz pointed out. “This time, it was a must-win for us. We started a little bit slow, but then we found our rhythm as the game developed. Even with the rain for the whole 80 minutes, we were able to overcome that challenge and achieve the goal of moving forward.”
Despite the relentless weather, Union’s offense found its groove
