Melissa swept through the northern Caribbean as a historic Category 5 hurricane, leaving a path of destruction from Jamaica to Cuba and Haiti. On Thursday, the storm was seen accelerating over open waters as it tracked toward Bermuda, bringing high winds and widespread damage in its wake.

Atlantic Canada may experience significant rainfall and tropical-force winds from the remnants of Melissa on Friday and Saturday. At the same time, moisture moving up the Atlantic coast will bring heavy rain to parts of Ontario and Quebec beginning Thursday. While not directly caused by Melissa, the storm is contributing to increased moisture in the region.
