A 20-year-old from Laval, Que., is facing seven charges following a police investigation into a complaint of sextortion.

Police said officers responded to the initial complaint on July 11, and through their investigation alleged the man had connected with someone under the age of 18 over a social-media network allowing video and text chats with strangers, and then broadened his interactions with that youth into other social-media platforms. Police alleged the man coerced the youth into engaging in sexual acts online that he recorded without the youth’s knowledge or consent, and then threatened to share those videos with the victim’s family, friends, and school community if the youth did not continue to engage in online sexual activity.
