A new report is recommending that Alberta’s two largest cities gain additional seats in the provincial legislature in time for the 2027 election.
The report comes from a commission which has been asked to study the province’s existing ridings and find where two more seats could be seamlessly integrated, bringing the total number of Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to 89.
The report recommends two new seats in Calgary and one in Edmonton. It also recommends that a new seat be made just outside Calgary for the suburban cities of Airdrie and Cochrane.
To with the recommendation of four seats while only adding two, the report also asks for four rural ridings to be merged into two ridings, with two in northern Alberta merging into one and two central ridings combining. Of the four
