DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) - Iowa Democrats are urging officials to use state funds to continue SNAP benefits during the federal shutdown.
Iowa Senate and House Democrats submitted a joint appeal to Governor Kim Reynolds and Attorney General Brenna Bird to advocate for Iowa families during the shutdown.
“By Saturday, working families across Iowa could lose the ability to put food on the table,” said House Democratic Leader Brian Meyer.
The Democrats say the state has $107 million in earned interest from pandemic recovery funds that could cover the SNAP shortfall. Iowa has over 100,000 participants receiving SNAP benefits.
According to the letter, the state’s recovery fund was created to help the community and protect others during the pandemic.
