Cayuga, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Duke Energy has been approved for two new natural gas units at its Cayuga Station in Vermillion County.
Wednesday, the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved a project that is expected to cost around $3 billion to construct and operate.
The Cayuga Plant is the oldest energy plant in Indiana, at around 60 years old. As the plant is nearing retirement, Duke Energy plans to begin operating a natural gas-fired plant instead.
Duke Energy states that a new plant is critical because energy needs are at an all-time high.
Duke Energy Spokesperson Angeline Protogere said the new plant could bring hundreds of jobs to Vermillion County through construction and operation. She said Duke Energy is also looking at finding a way to continue to run the coal-fired plant
