They went looking for a shipwreck in Antarctica’s western Weddell Sea but found something else instead.
Researchers on the hunt in 2019 for the wreckage of the HMS Endurance, which became trapped and ripped apart by ice in 1915, instead discovered geometric patterns on the ocean floor created by icefish, cnn.com reported .
Until July 2017, that seafloor had been hidden by the massive A68 iceberg — the size of Delaware at 5,800 kilometres — before it broke away from the Larsen C Ice Shelf.
To study the previously hidden seafloor, the 49-day Weddell Sea Expedition 2019 was organized and began in January aboard the South African polar research vessel SA Agulhas II.
