FORT MILL, S.C. (WBTV) - A South Carolina mother is asking for change to a law that could allow a person convicted of murder to get released from prison.
In 2018, 19-year-old Karson Whitesell was working at Fort Mill’s Peach Stand when she was murdered. Christopher Mendez pled guilty to the murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Since then, he’s been looking for Post Conviction Relief. In South Carolina that is a proceeding that challenges a criminal conviction.
In South Carolina, Post Conviction Relief can result in a new trial, or even resentencing, or a dismissal of charges. For the last seven years, Whitesell’s mother, Debbie Harrison, says she’s been in and out of court.
