MACON, Ga. — Nearly 1.5 million Georgians will lose their food stamp benefits Saturday due to a federal government shutdown, affecting approximately one in eight residents statewide.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, provides nutrition assistance to low-income families. Federal funding for the program has been suspended due to the shutdown.

Teeneka Johnson, a Macon mother of four, recently lost her job at a daycare and relies on approximately $600 monthly in SNAP benefits to feed her children. She is now seeking additional assistance from local food banks.

"My biggest question: What am I supposed to do now with them not coming?" Johnson said. "For who knows when they gonna come. If they don't come this month, are they coming in December? What do I do now?"
