NEWTON, Iowa —

Newton High School is receiving a significant financial boost from T-Mobile after finishing eighth in the company's "Friday Night 5G Lights" contest.

Twenty-five schools across the country competed for the $1 million grand prize. Newton was the only one from Iowa and received a total of 271,100 votes.

While the Cardinals did not take the top spot, the school will receive $31,000 to update its weight room, in addition to a $25,000 grant awarded for being a finalist.

The winning high school was in Dierks, Ark., with more than 1.9 million votes. Its population is just under 900. As the top vote-getter, Dierks will receive a major stadium remodel.
