SPOKANE, Wash. — The day after Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown declared an emergency over the government shutdown’s impacts, city leaders are working out the details of that action.

Spokane City Council gathered for a special meeting on Thursday to outline how agencies are expanding access under the emergency declaration to support those affected by the government shutdown and the city's new camping ban.

The City of Spokane says the mayor's declaration will fund 50 additional shelter beds, expedite eviction prevention contracts, and fund mobile medication-assisted treatment. The mayor said the actions aim to combat dwindling government funds.

"We want to go upstream and prevent more homelessness," said Mayor Lisa Brown.
