CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. — Prince George’s County Council members say they are demanding answers after the grocery chain Shoppers announced plans to close several stores in the county, including a longtime location in Capitol Heights.
Council leaders said they received no advance notice about the closures, which are scheduled to take effect Nov. 8. The closures have sparked frustration among residents who rely on the store for affordable groceries.
“It’s been here a long time in this community — all my life — and it’s really sad,” said Vernon Williams, who lives near the Capitol Heights location. “It’s the closest one in this area for everyone to get to.”
Residents like Williams worry the closures will create or worsen food deserts in neighborhoods already struggling with limited access
