PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - A Central Illinois law enforcement expert said he believes the Sonya Massey Bill, requiring background checks on all potential police officers, will improve agency operations.

Senate Bill 2345 was signed into law by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker in August and requires law enforcement agencies in Illinois to background check every potential officer hire.

Central Illinois Police Training Center Director Brian Fengel said he believes all officers need to be background checked.

“I think it’s an excellent bill to give guidelines to agencies across the board,” he said. “We want to know everything about this person. They should do a polygraph, a psychological, a medical, an extensive background investigation, and also training and disciplinary records.”
