The Southern women's basketball team will begin the new season with lofty expectations, a byproduct, at least in part, because of the historical run it made last season.
After winning the SWAC regular season and tournament titles last season, Southern was the pick to repeat as the regular season champion at last month's conference media day. A talented group of newcomers will need to mix in with a group of returning veterans if Southern is to live up to conference expectations.
Last season, the Jaguars went 15-3 in the SWAC regular season before sweeping three games in the conference postseason tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. It was there that Southern turned a great season into one that was special.
