NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Hurricane Melissa’s historic landfall in Jamaica destroyed homes and left trees scattered in the streets.

Brian Trascher, Louisiana national vice president of the United Cajun Navy, said this devastation reminds him of storms like Katrina, which is why he sent his team to help victims on the island.

“It’s the biggest hurricane to hit that in over 100 years,” Trascher said. “No matter what they did it was going to overwhelm them, so we knew they were going to need some extra help.”

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 on Tuesday, with 185 mph winds.

Trascher said several Cajun Navy members arrived in Jamaica before the storm.
