CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Two local bakeries are putting compassion into action — using their craft to make sure no one goes without the basics during the ongoing SNAP benefit shutdown.

At Bread and Buttered Bakery inside NewBo City Market, owners Nikki Lynn and her wife are baking extra loaves and giving them away for free to anyone who needs one.

“Because of the lack of SNAP benefits, we know that affects so many more people,” said Lynn. “My wife who had our oldest at 19 was on SNAP back then, and it did help her in bridging the gap so it’s something that we take personal and we never want someone to be food insecure.”

Lynn says they gave out about 35 in just one day. The effort quickly grew — not just in need, but in community support.
