SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois General Assembly has passed a bill to fund Chicago area mass transit.
The Illinois Senate gave the bill final approval at 4:20 a.m. Friday, two hours after the Illinois House endorsed it over the objection of Republican leaders.
The bill funds mass transit by diverting more than $800 million from the state's sales tax on motor fuel to transit operations. The money will be split between downstate and northern Illinois.
CTA, Metra and Pace face a $230 million funding shortfall next year and lawmakers say this new bill would raise $1.5 billion in revenue.
