West Coast’s finals dreams are all but over after a 20-point loss to Carlton on Friday night has them needing a massive upset on Saturday to stay inside the top eight.
The Eagles were chasing their first-ever finals appearance but needed to beat the Blues, given Adelaide and Fremantle were locked with them on six wins and will play each other on Sunday, while Sydney are raging hot favourites to beat 15th-placed Essendon on Saturday to achieve their seventh victory.
West Coast lost to the Swans last week to put their finals spot in jeopardy and now their destiny is no longer in their own hands.
Scores were level at the final change but Carlton’s power and talent stood out when the game was on the line. They stormed clear to kick four goals to one in the final term.
