What to know on Day 31 of the government shutdown:
President Trump called on Senate Republicans to invoke the "nuclear option" to scrap the filibuster and end the government shutdown .
The Senate's rules require most legislation to attract 60 votes in order to advance, but changing the rules only requires a simple majority. Most Republican senators have been opposed to doing away with the 60-vote requirement, arguing that it encourages bipartisan compromise.
Now on its 31st day, the shutdown is almost certain to extend into next week, with the Senate adjourned until Monday. Bipartisan talks between rank-and-file senators are expected to continue over the weekend.
