Sam Claflin has been trying to land himself a cameo role in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The British actor made his debut as champion Finnick Odair in the 2013 sequel Catching Fire and returned for the two concluding Mockingjay chapters, all of which were directed by Francis Lawrence. In an interview with People, Claflin shared that he recently met up with Lawrence to watch his new movie, The Long Walk, and their conversation turned to Sunrise on the Reaping, which is now in production. The Me Before You star also revealed that he pitched Lawrence the idea of a cameo. "Catching Fire was such a special time in my life," Clafin said. "We were all reminiscing about the times (filming Hunger Games). And they're obviously now shooting the Haymitch prequel, which is really exciting. I was still trying to get myself into a cameo role." If he were to make a cameo, Claflin would have to play a different character as the story is set 24 years before the events of the first film and therefore it does not feature Finnick. The film, once again directed by Lawrence, depicts the 50th annual Hunger Games tournament through the eyes of Haymitch Abernathy, with Joseph Zada playing a younger version of Woody Harrelson's character. Last year, Claflin addressed the fans calling for a prequel revolving around Finnick. "I don't know if there's room for me to go back. I'm too old now," he told Variety. "I've heard rumours that people are asking for a Finnick prequel, and all I'm gonna say is that I would be all in for Finnick's dad." However, Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobson have already stated that they would not make a film unless Suzanne Collins wrote the novel first. Sunrise on the Reaping, based on Collins' 2025 book of the same name, will be released in November 2026.
