Benchmark domestic equity indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, opened lower today and briefly turned positive during intraday trade. Indices failed to sustain gains extending losses amid weak global cues, ending the session in the red.
The Sensex shed 466 points to close at 83 thousand 939, while the Nifty dropped 156 points to settle at 25 thousand 722. In the broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange closed in negative zone. The Mid-Cap index lost over half a per cent, and the Small-Cap index ended 0.4 per cent down.
