LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office on Friday said K9 Arlo, the county's oldest working active-duty dog, has passed away at seven years old.

K9 Alro, a Belgian Malinois, has served the county since 2021. He specialized in apprehending suspects and detecting narcotics. LCSO said he was also assigned to the Texas Anti-Gang Center with his handler.

"He was involved in numerous narcotics operations, working hard each day to make Lubbock County a safer place to live," LCSO said in a press release.

LCSO said K9 Arlo was expected to retire soon. He was participating in a routine training exercise on Tuesday when he suffered a medical emergency. LCSO said K9 Arlo was rushed to an emergency vet
