Great Smoky Mountains Natl. Park — Friends of the Smokies announced it and other agencies are providing funding to ensure the Great Smoky Mountains National Park can continue to stay open during the ongoing federal government shutdown.

The government has been shut down for nearly a full month as of Oct. 31. Without a bipartisan agreement to fund and reopen the government, the shutdown is likely to continue into November.

Friends of the Smokies announced on Friday that it and several local and state partners will be able to continue funding the park through Jan. 4, 2026, with limited staffing. The agreement will allow Cades Cove Loop Road to remain open as well as the restrooms, campgrounds, visitor centers and picnic areas that are typically open this time of year.
