Fresh snowfall was reported in Nathula, Kupup, and the Tsomgo (Changu) Lake area since early morning
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Sikkim for the next 24 hours after heavy to very heavy snowfall blanketed the higher reaches of the Indo-China border region on Friday. The severe weather has brought temperatures down sharply and disrupted movement along key mountain routes, including the strategic Nathula Pass.
Fresh snowfall was reported in Nathula, Kupup, and the Tsomgo (Changu) Lake area since early morning, with the mercury dipping to sub-zero levels. According to the IMD, the intense snowfall is expected to continue over the next 24 hours, prompting authorities to warn residents and tourists against travelling to high-altitude zones.
