LONDON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The Mayor of London is urging residents to seek lawful assistance after social media posts encouraged people to take groceries without paying if federal benefits are delayed.
Mayor Randall Weddle says a government shutdown does not excuse theft and warns that anyone caught stealing could face arrest and criminal charges.
Weddle adds that local organizations, churches, and city staff are working together to help families in need during this period of uncertainty.
He’s encouraging residents to reach out to City Hall or partnering agencies for support rather than breaking the law.
