Reproductive justice organization Yellowhammer Fund is dedicating $50,000 and organizing a food drive to help those affected by the loss of federal food assistance in November.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, more popularly known as SNAP or food stamps, will cease on Saturday if the government shutdown continues. This means that nearly 42 million people nationwide, including an estimated 750,00 Alabamians, won’t receive food assistance. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said this week nearly 23,000 Birmingham households will be affected by the cutoff.
