Mayor Wu announced today that the city and the Boston Foundation are starting a fund - with an initial seed of $1 million - to help the estimated 140,000 Bostonians on SNAP.
The fund will help recipients buy groceries and other essentials, Wu said at a press conference with foundation President Lee Pelton, other city officials and officials from nearby cities.
"We will never back down from fulfilling the promise of the America our cities have fought to create," Wu said, adding that in Boston, "food isn't a bargaining chip, it's human right. ... While the federal administration walks away from its responsibilities, we are stepping in."
Pelton said his group and others in the region, such as the Greater Boston Food Bank will do what they can to counteract the "moral failure" of the Trump
