A person was mauled by a grizzly bear south of Cochrane on Thursday afternoon, according to Alberta’s Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services.
The person was airlifted by STARS and transported to a hospital. His condition remains unknown.
The bear involved in the attack was shot and killed by the hunting partner of the injured person. A second bear fled the scene after the encounter.
The agency said its officers will be collecting DNA samples from the survivor to confirm the bear shot in the encounter was the one who attacked the pair. Fish and wildlife officers will also conduct a full assessment of the area to determine what led to the encounter.
