The Mining and Energy Union (MEU) has slammed claims Tahmoor mine owner Sanjeev Gupta for saying the Diwali festival in India was to blame for workers at the mine not getting paid.

In a letter to MEU district president Bob Timbs, Mr Gupta also revealed Tahmoor had lost $100 million which had been sent to prop up the failing Whyalla steelworks in South Australia.

Mr Gupta also claimed he had secured $140 million for the Tahmoor mine but has only been able to access $25 million of this.
